Overview:

Urban areas, especially those with high light pollution and dense buildings, pose significant risks to migratory birds, including disorientation and building collisions. I studied bird movements in Chicago during night time migration, which is critical for developing effective conservation and collision mitigation strategies in urban airspaces.

About Our Speaker:

Shu-Yueh “Winnie” Liao is a PhD student at the University of Illinois, Urbana. She studies bird migration, urban ecology, and conservation technology. Her work integrates acoustic monitoring, thermal cameras, and weather radar to explore how birds use urban airspace during migration. She is particularly interested in bird--building collisions and the development of tools to support bird conservation efforts in cities.
